The biological oxygen demand (BOD), which is also known as the biochemical oxygen demand, is a measurement of the amount of dissolved oxygen that is needed by anaerobic organisms for the oxidation of organic materials in a particular water sample. It acts as an indication of the amount of putrescible organic matter that is present in water.
